Extension announced to Food Vision 2030 review consultation

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon has announced a two-week extension to the public consultation on the mid-term review of Food Vision 2030.

The consultation, which opened in April and was launched to provide stakeholders and members of the public with an opportunity to contribute to the review, will now remain open until May 28, 2026.

The original deadline was this Thursday (May 14).

Food Vision 2030 is Ireland’s current strategy for the agri-food sector.

According to the strategy, its aim is for Ireland to be "A World Leader in Sustainable Food Systems", with a focus on environmental, economic and social sustainability.

According to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the strategy takes a food systems approach, recognising the "importance of greater policy coherence and the involvement of all the food system stakeholders".

Extension

Announcing the extension, Minister Heydon encouraged all interested parties to take part, saying: "The public consultation is a key element of the stakeholder-led strategy review process and broad participation is key to shaping this review.

"I am therefore pleased to extend the deadline for submissions to the Food Vision 2030 public consultation.

"The involvement of as many stakeholders as possible is essential to the review process, to ensure that Food Vision remains a stakeholder-led strategy.

"This extension to the public consultation will provide additional time for stakeholders, including the wider public, to give their views and provide input into the review process," the minister said.

Submissions to the review consultation can be made online through a consultation questionnaire.

The new deadline for receipt of submissions is Thursday, May 28.

Food Vision 2030

The consultation on the Food Vision 2030 review was launched on April 2.

The strategy includes 218 actions across four "missions" as follows:

  • Mission 1: A Climate Smart, Environmentally Sustainable Agri-Food Sector (61 actions);
  • Mission 2: Viable and Resilient Primary Producers, with Enhanced Wellbeing (78 actions);
  • Mission 3: Food that is Safe, Nutritious and Appealing, Trusted and Valued at Home and Abroad (37 actions);
  • Mission 4: An Innovative, Competitive and Resilient Agri-Food Sector, Driven by Technology and Talent (33 actions).

Announcing the consultation last month, Minister Heydon said: "As we enter the second half of this decade, it is timely to reflect on what has been achieved and to formally consider how Food Vision 2030 can evolve further, to ensure that it remains ambitious, focused and responsive to evolving challenges and opportunities.

"I decided to commence a mid-term review of Food Vision 2030 rather than begin a new strategy process, because its core missions and ambitions are as relevant to the challenges and opportunities for the agri-food sector today as they were four years ago when it was published," the minister added.
