Government working on 'significant and substantial' fuel package

The government is working on finalising a "significant and substantial" support package to address spiralling fuel prices.

However, key details are yet to be worked out and there will be further engagement over the weekend.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon and Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien met today (Friday, April 10), with national representative bodies from the agricultural contractors, farming, food, transport, and freight sectors to discuss the significant challenges arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The meeting was also attended by Ministers of State Sean Canney, Noel Grealish, Timmy Dooley and Michael Healy-Rae.

It appeared earlier in the afternoon that the government was taking a hard line and wanted to see protests and blockades end before making any proposals.

It now appears that government will at least propose a package, pending finalisation of details.

The meeting brought together major representative organisations for a "full and frank" discussion on the growing pressures facing these sectors, particularly in relation to rising fuel and fertiliser costs, which are driving increased production expenses and placing strain across supply chains.

A government statement said that ministers expressed their understanding of the seriousness of the situation and the pressures being experienced by farmers, contractors, and transport operators.

Ministers "emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting those affected and acknowledged the need for swift and targeted action".

The government confirmed that a "significant and enhanced support package, in addition to the €250 million already allocated, is being finalised in detail to alleviate the burden on impacted sectors".

The government said that constructive engagement with stakeholders will continue over the weekend and will reconvene again tomorrow (Saturday, April 11) to finalise the details of the response.

The government said it wants to bring proposals to a conclusion as soon as possible.

It is understood that meetings will reconvene tomorrow on a sectoral basis, meaning hauliers will meet with Minister for Transport and farm representatives will meet with Minister Heydon.

It is understood that the meeting was generally constructive, although there were also moments of tension at times.
