Offaly event on beef profitability and performance next week

Beef farmers across the country can learn more about how to improve the profitability and performance of their herd at a special event next week.

A FutureBeef Farm Walk will take place on Friday, June 5 on the farm of John and James Dunne in Portarlington, Co. Offaly.

This is the second in a series of FutureBeef walks organised by Teagasc, taking place this summer.

The Dunnes operate a highly profitable beef system, combining 79 suckler cows with a dairy calf-to-beef enterprise.

They purchase 140 dairy calves annually and are brought right through to finish.

Farmers attending the event will hear how the Dunnes manage profitability, breeding, and grassland management.

There will also be information provided on finishing performance.

Farmers will also learn how the Dunnes focus on home-grown grain feeding, and see a newly developed cattle handling facility.

Speaking ahead of the farm walk, Teagasc FutureBeef programme manager Martina Harrington said: “2025 has been a very positive year for suckler farmers, with favourable weather conditions and strong beef prices contributing to improved profitability.

"The Dunne farm is an excellent example of what can be achieved through quality genetics, effective management and careful cost control.

"Their upcoming farm walk will offer valuable practical insights for farmers aiming to boost performance and profitability on their own farms.”

The farm walk, which is supported by Dawn Meats, aims to deliver practical, real-life insight into profitable beef farming systems.

The free event gets underway at 6:30p.m on Friday, June 5 and there will be food and refreshments available afterwards.
