Mountbellew Mart in Co. Galway hosted its weekly general cattle sale on Friday, April 24, and its weekly sheep sale on Saturday, April 25.

Speaking to Agriland after the sale, Mountbellew Mart manager Oliver Noone said numbers in the cattle sale "remained similar" with "a large entry of weanlings and store bullocks" and a smaller entry of store heifers.

In the weanling heifer sale, the mart manager said that up to €5.53/kg was paid for a 275kg Charolais heifer that made €1,520.

Other prices from the heifer sale:

Two 327kg Limousin heifers sold for €1,540 or €4.71/kg;
275kg Limousin heifer sold for €1,240 or €4.51/kg;
275kg Charolais heifer sold for €1,240 or €4.51/kg.

Weanling bulls reached up to €5.00/kg in the sale for a 270kg Limousin bull that sold for €1,350.

Another two Limousin bulls weighing 350kg sold for €1,650 or €4.71/kg.

A 265kg Limousin bull sold for €1,220 or €4.60/kg and a 250kg Charolais bull sold for €1,120 or €4.48/kg.

In the bullock sale, a 335kg Belgian Blue bullock sold for €1,380 or €4.12/kg, while a 310kg Belgian Blue bullock sold for €1,260 or €4.06/kg.

The mart is set to host a special sale of weanling heifers in conjunction with the usual cattle sale this evening, Friday, May 1 at 6:00p.m.

Mountbellew Mart Sheep Sale

Mountbellew Mart hosted its sheep sale on Saturday, April 25, with a "bigger sale and a lot more stag ewes coming on offer that met a firm trade", according to the mart manager.

Hoggets and spring lambs held in price and ewes with lambs at foot were described as "a good trade".

A pen of eight spring lambs weighing 41.1kg sold for €192/head. Another three spring lambs weighing 46.5kg sold for €225.

Eight wether hoggets weighing 47.5kg sold for €185/head and a heavier 50.1kg hogget sold for €219.

In the cull ewe sale, five ewes weighing 93kg sold for €226/head. Two 106kg ewes sold for €220/head.

Four ewes weighing 110kg each sold for €230/head.

Three ewes weighing 93kg each also sold for €230/head and a pen of seven ewes weighing 82kg sold for €200/head.

A pen of seven ewes weighing 61kg sold for €160/head and a stag ram weighing 110kg sold for €258.

In the breeding sheep sale, a second-crop ewe with two lambs at foot sold for €470. A third crop ewe with two lambs at foot sold for €350.

Two yearlings with four lambs at foot sold at €275/outfit.
