Man charged in connection to fatal assault in rural Waterford

A man who was arrested in relation to a fatal assault in rural Co. Waterford, in which another man in his 70s died, has now been charged, Gardaí have confirmed.

The arrested man, who is aged in is 40s, was charged yesterday evening after being arrested in connection to the assault investigation.

He is due to appear before Carrick-on-Suir District Court this morning (April 15) at 10:30a.m.

Gardaí said that investigations are ongoing.

The fatal assault occurred at a residence in Cappagh, between Dungarvan and Lismore.

The incident was reported at around 6:00p.m on Monday evening (April 13).

The victim was discovered with serious injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His remains were taken to University Hospital Waterford, where a post-mortem examination has been arranged.

A man (40s) was arrested at the scene and was detained at a garda station in the Eastern garda region (which comprises the east, southeast and parts of the midlands).

Gardaí said that the scene of the assault and the domestic residence was preserved for examination, and the coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist were informed.

An incident room has been established at Dungarvan Garda Station, and a senior investigating officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation.

The original statement from gardaí confirmed: "An Garda Síochána [is] investigating all of the circumstances of a fatal assault that occurred in the townland of Cappagh, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford on the evening of Monday, April 13, 2026.

"Shortly after 6:00p.m…gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident that occurred outside a residential property in Cappagh, Dungarvan, Co. Waterford.

"A male (aged in his 70s) was discovered with serious injuries and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene. The remains of the deceased have been removed from the scene to the mortuary in University Hospital Waterford where a post mortem will taken place in due course," the statement said.

"A male (aged in his 40s ) was arrested at the scene and is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a garda station in the Eastern Region," it added.
