The Midlands and Western Livestock Improvement Society hosted a multi-breed show and sale of pedigree bulls and heifers at the Showgrounds, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Roscommon, on Saturday, February 7.
Speaking to Agriland after the sale, Lourda McGowan from the Midlands and Western Livestock Improvement Society said that there was some concern ahead of the sale at the fact no Northern Ireland or UK customers could participate due to bluetongue restrictions.
Despite the concerns, there was an 80% clearance of the 50 bulls and four heifers in the sale, with 40 bulls and three heifers changing hands on the day.
A total of 36 of the Angus bulls offered on the day were sold, with the average sale price for these settling at €4,100. Three Angus heifers sold on the day to an average sale price of just under €2,970.
Four Charolais bulls sold on the day to an average price of €4,075.
The top price of the sale went to Co. Cavan woman Margaret McKiernan for Lot 32, a 20-month-old Angus bull sired by HW Abacus. His dam was Drumcrow Vixon and the bull (Drumcrow Assassin) secured a price of €7,400 on the day.
Brian McWeeney from Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim, secured the second-top price of the sale for Lot 25, his 21-month-old Angus bull Mough Adrian.
This bull was sired by Mough Vidal and his dam was Mough Una. The bull secured a price of €6,500 on the day.
Lot 21 owned by Alan Gibbons from Co. Roscommon secured €6,000. Ballycallen Andy sold as a 20-month-old Angus bull sired by Mough Vidal and his dam was Ballycallen Vera.

The Dunne family from Co. Cavan secured €5,000 for their entry, 15-month-old Angus bull Highpark Ace of Clubs.
This bull was bred by THJ Dorran from Co. Sligo. He was sired by Rawburn Jumbo Eric and his dam was Highpark Tia Kirsty.

Michael Grant from Co. Donegal secured €4,700 for his April-2024-born Charolais bull Maghermore Vulcan. This bull was sired by Clenagh Lyle and his dam was Maghermore Nell.
The Champion Angus Heifer on the day was Lot 13, Lavally Aisling, owned by John Mullooly from Co. Roscommon.

This heifer was sired by Drumcrow Tribesman and her dam was Lavally Velvet. The heifer went on to sell for €4,100.
The Midlands and Western Livestock Improvement Society recently hosted its AGM, which saw Norman Little step into the role of president, replacing his predecessor Thomas Abbott who stepped away from the position after four years in the role.
