Weekend weather: Unsettled conditions with rain to continue

The weekend weather forecast looks like the low pressure will continue to dominate, bringing further spells of rain or showers at times.

There are a Status Yellow warnings that will come into effect today (Friday, January 30) for several counties. A Status Yellow rain warning is currently in effect for the northern counties of Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Derry until 6:00p.m today.

Met Éireann has also issues a Status Yellow rain warning for Carlow, Dublin, Kilkenny, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Waterford, which will come into effect at 12:00p.m today and will stay in place until midnight.

According to the national forecaster, further heavy rain and showers falling on saturated ground, combined with high river levels, will lead to the following:

  • Localised flooding;
  • River flooding;
  • Difficult travel conditions.

It follows severe flooding in the south-east and east, particularly Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford as a result of Storm Chandra earlier this week.

Weekend weather forecast

Looking at the general weekend weather forecast, there will be rain in Ulster this morning, with scattered heavy showers across the rest of the country.

Another spell of heavy rain will move into the south-east around midday and will spread across most of Leinster and eastern parts of Munster during the afternoon and evening.

Some thunderstorms are possible too. Scattered showers will continue in other areas.

With saturated ground conditions and high river levels, further localised flooding is possible. Highest temperatures of 7°C to 10° with moderate to fresh south-easterly winds, easing light to moderate.

Rain will extend to most areas tonight, apart from the south-west where there will be clear spells and scattered showers.

Winds will be light to moderate and variable in direction.

Tomorrow, Saturday morning, cloud and outbreaks of rain will affect areas away from the south-west, where there will be sunny spells and a few showers.

The rain will become more isolated as the day goes on and some bright or sunny intervals will develop with highest temperatures of 7° to 11° with light to moderate, variable winds.

Saturday night will bring scattered showers and clear spells at first, along with patches of mist and fog. Cloud and outbreaks of rain will move into the west and south overnight.

Lowest temperatures of 1° to 5° are expected with light to moderate west to south-west or variable winds, becoming fresh at times in the west and south.

On Sunday, cloud and outbreaks of rain will move north-eastwards across the country, with dry and bright conditions following from the south-west. Highest temperatures will range from 5° to 10° with light to moderate and variable winds.

There will be a few patches of light rain in the north-east and east on Sunday night, but otherwise it will be dry with long clear spells.

Patches of mist and fog will form in light, variable winds and it will be cold with frost as temperatures fall to between -2° and +3°.

Outlook for next week

It will be cold with mist and fog on Bank Holiday Monday morning. It will become mostly cloudy with patchy rain or drizzle developing, mainly in eastern areas with highest temperatures of 5° to 9° with moderate to fresh easterly winds.

Monday night will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain or drizzle. Lowest temperatures will range from 1° to 5° with moderate to fresh easterly winds.

Remaining mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain or drizzle then on Tuesday. Highest temperatures of 3° to 7° are forecast with moderate to fresh easterly winds, decreasing light to moderate.

For the rest of next week it will likely stay unsettled with further spells of rain or showers.

Field conditions

All poorly drained soils and moderately drained soils are waterlogged, while all other soils are saturated.

With unsettled conditions over the coming week, there will be little to no improvement to soil conditions, though some moderately drained soils could see an improvement in soil moisture deficits in the west.
