Weather unsettled this week with more persistent spells of rain

The coming week will see unsettled weather with more persistent spells of rain and breezy conditions, according to Met Éireann.

Today (Monday, January 19) will start off cloudy with widespread outbreaks of rain and drizzle.

A clearance to drier weather, with some sunshine too, will slowly spread from the southwest, with the rain largely becoming confined to Ulster and north Leinster by evening.

Highest temperatures today will be 5° to 9°, with light variable winds.

Any lingering rain or drizzle in Ulster will mostly clear during the first half of the night, leaving mainly dry and cold conditions with clear spells, allowing some patches of frost and ice to form. Some mist and fog patches will also develop in light variable winds.

However, cloud will build from the southwest through the second half of the night with wet and windy conditions following towards morning. Lowest temperatures will be -2° to +2°.

Tomorrow (Tuesday, January 20) will start off cloudy, with wet and windy weather moving northwards over the country. The rain will be heavy at times.

A clearance to dry conditions with sunny spells will follow before showers or further spells of rain push in from the south. Highest temperatures will be 5° to 9°, with fresh to strong and gusty easterly winds easing with the clearance of the rain.

Tomorrow night will be breezy, with scattered showers or more persistent spells of rain and just limited clear spells. Lowest temperatures will be 2° to 6°, with moderate to fresh and gusty southeasterly winds.

Met Éireann said that current indications in the forecast are that, on Wednesday (January 21), more northern areas will see a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, while further south it will be cloudier with more persistent outbreaks of rain.

Highest temperatures are expected to be 6° to 10°, with moderate to fresh easterly winds, stronger on southern and eastern coasts.

Wednesday night will see widespread showers or more persistent spells of rain with limited clear spells. Lowest temperatures should be 3° to 7° with light to moderate cyclonic variable winds.

The current forecast indicates scattered showers with limited bright spells for Thursday (January 22). Highest temperatures will be 6° to 9°, with light to moderate southeasterly winds.

Met Éireann said the detail in the forecast is uncertain for Friday (January 23), but current indications suggest a breezy day with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, or more persistent outbreaks of rain, spreading northwards across the country.

Highest temperatures are expected to be 5° to 8°, with moderate to fresh southeasterly winds, stronger on Atlantic coasts.

Beyond Friday, low pressure is likely to continue to dominate, Met Éireann said.
