Tributes have been paid to Ger Maher, a farmer in his early 40s from Roscrea, Co. Tipperary, who recently passed away suddenly.
The farmer is survived by his wife and three children, parents Tim and Kathleen, and brothers Eoin and Tadhg.
The Maher family is well known in the local farming community as Ger’s father, Tim Maher, is chair of Farm Relief Services (FRS). Tom Maher, Ger’s uncle, is a founding member of the Tullamore Show and FBD National Livestock Show.
A statement from the Ballyskenach–Killaville GAA Club read: “We as a club are devastated to hear of the untimely death of Ger Maher. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family at this very difficult time.”
Ger’s wife Claire was involved in Naomh Brid Camogie Club, who also paid tribute.
A statement from Naomh Brid said: “The club sends its deepest condolences to our underage mentor Claire on the passing of her husband Ger, to their kids Aoife, Roìsìn and Gearoíd, their family and friends. Our thoughts are with you all.”
Ger was heavily involved in the annual charity event, the Shinrone Tractor Run. A GoFundMe has been established in Ger’s honour by the tractor run committee.
The committee paid tribute to Ger, saying the fundraiser was “in memory and honour of Ger Maher, whose passion for and commitment to Shinrone Tractor Run was admirable. Ger will be greatly missed by the committee and all who knew him.”
The Shinrone Women’s Group also passed on their condolences, saying: “It is with a heavy heart that we send our condolences to Claire Maher and her family, on the very sudden passing of her husband Ger. May he rest in peace.”
The death notice on RIP.ie said that Ger's passing is deeply regretted by his sisters-in-law, mother-in-law, nephews and nieces; aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, neighbours and “his wide circle of treasured farming friends”.
