Over 50 dairy cows for Athenry Mart Show & Sale

Over 50 dairy cows will go under the hammer at Athenry Mart, Co. Galway tomorrow, Thursday, March 26, as part of the annual Dairy Show and Sale.

The sale will get underway in Ring Two from 12noon, with a mix of freshly calved heifers and cows available, as well as a number of in-calf heifers/cows.

Eurogene AI Services will sponsor the show classes for the dairy cows.

On the show and sale, Mark Connolly - a Eurogene AI representative - said: “It is a pleasure to support this event in Athenry Mart and give something back to our loyal customers in the Galway region.”

Athenry Mart will also have its weekly sale of calves and weanlings in Ring One tomorrow.

Alongside the show and sale for dairy cows, there will also be a show element for calves presented for sale.

Prizes for the best Angus, Hereford, Friesian and Continental cross calves will be given on the day with support from JFC Agri Group.

Commenting ahead of the sale, Athenry Mart manager, Padraic Fahy, said: “We are lucky to have the support of countless farmers across the dairy, beef and sheep sectors - both near and far - who entrust us with providing a market for their livestock.

“Tomorrow dairy farmers will take center stage and we hope to have a successful sale.

“The introduction of the show element to our calf sale this week is to recognise the quality breeding and care put into calves prior to presenting them for sale by farmers in this region.

“Obviously, the quality of any trade is underpinned by the buyers.

“We are lucky to have a variety of buyers - from farmers, to dealers, to exporters - who return to us week in and week out.

“This, again, is a testament to the quality of calf produced by farmers in the region," he added.
