Organic Centre set to celebrate Potato Day

Potato Day - the annual celebration of the humble spud - will be marked with a packed line-up of activities at the Organic Centre in Rossinver, Co. Leitrim tomorrow (Sunday, March 1).

The event - which runs from 12:00p.m-4:00p.m with free entry - will feature a craft and food market with locally produced goods.

Dervilla Keegan, communications officer at the centre said: "It's the perfect opportunity to get your seed potatoes to start planting with the centre's large national supply and variation of quality seed potatoes for sale in the shop.

"It's a chance to be inspired by tours and demonstrations about potatoes from the experts, with the Loy Association of Ireland showing how they planted potatoes in times gone by, and boxty-making stemming from the region with Paula Heatley of Paula's Family Kitchen."

Visitors will also be able to how to plant your own potatoes with head gardener Aaron McGowan, who will be "chitting and chatting", Keegan said.

The centre will be joined by an ever-growing line-up of speakers, with a talk on food waste and security and the European ROSETTA project by Angelo Galatolo, food scientist at the Teagasc Food Research Centre.

John Brennan from Leitrim Organic Farmers and Talamh Beo will speak about the work, including the advocacy work of Talamh Beo, and the importance of food sovereignty and promoting resilience in rural and farming communities.

There will be also be wool spinning, basket weaving, and arts and craft for children.

Visitors can also enjoy "games of old" with Steffi Otto from Heritage Crafts Alive. Live music will be performed by the Cleary family and Mary T.

All things potato will be on the menu of the Grass Roof cafe, where Lily Conlon, formerly of An Caife Bia-Slainte, will be at the helm for Potato Day. 

Stephen Campbell, manager of the Organic Centre, is looking forward to the day.

He said: "We're excited to welcome everyone back to our annual Potato Day.

"It's the perfect kick-off to the growing season, an opportunity for seasoned growers, friends, and families to meet up again."
