Numerous sheep killed in Longford dog attack

Investigations are underway following an attack on sheep in Clonart, Co. Longford.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí responded to a report concerning the death of a number of sheep in the Clonart, Longford area on March 12.

“Investigations are ongoing.”

Longford Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) sheep chairperson Joe Esler said: “It’s devastating for a farmer to have his flock wiped out in a careless attack like this.

“Until such time as dog owners are found liable for the damage, such attacks will probably continue.”

Appeals to dog owners

In recent months, numerous appeals have been made to dog owners to take precautions to protect livestock.

In Northern Ireland, DAERA (Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs) Minister Andrew Muir said livestock worrying can have "devastating consequences for animals and causes significant distress to farmer families".

"The law is clear. It is a criminal offence to allow a dog onto land containing livestock unless that dog is under control.

"Where a dog worries livestock by attacking, killing or chasing animals in a way that causes injury, suffering or financial loss to their owner, the person in charge of that dog may face prosecution."

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon has also urged dog owners to act responsibly and ensure their pets are under control during the lambing season.

"I’m determined to ensure this critical issue becomes embedded in the consciousness of dog owners, and ensure that dog owners understand their responsibility and the significant damage a dog can do to a flock if uncontrolled.

He added: "You simply cannot bring your dog for a walk out in the country and just let it roam."
