The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage is investigating an incident involving a dead Red Kite (Milvus milvus) in Co. Meath.
The Red Kite is a protected species under the Wildlife Acts, 19 76-2023.
It was recovered from farmland in the Baltrasna area of Co. Meath in February.
X-rays revealed the presence of shotgun pellets embedded in its body.
The persecution of Irish birds of prey is unlawful under the 1976 Wildlife Acts, as amended, and the Birds and Habitats Regulations 2011, as amended.
Convictions under legislation can carry a fine of up to €5,000 and 12 months imprisonment on summary conviction.
A maximum fine of €500,000 and three years on conviction is possible under indictment.
