Met Éireann warns of more heavy rain for east and south-east

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow weather warning for further heavy rain in the south and south east of the country.

The national forecaster said that more downpours are on the way for Carlow; Dublin; Kilkenny; Waterford; Wexford and Wicklow.

The warning is currently due to be in place from midnight on Thursday (January 29) until midnight on Friday (January 30).

The heavy rain and showers falling on saturated ground, combined with high river levels, may lead to more localised flooding; river flooding and difficult travel conditions.

"With catchments already heavily saturated from recent rainfall, even modest additional showers could lead to rapid surface flooding and rising river levels," Met Éireann said.

The weather warning comes as many parts of the south and south-east of the country are continuing to deal with the impact of Storm Chandra.

Homeowners, businesses and farmers faced extensive flooding and damage, particularly in counties such as Wexford, Wicklow and Dublin.

The storm also brought high winds which resulted in thousands being left without power.

Dr Fiachra O'Loughlin from the School of Civil Engineering, University College Dublin (UCD) said that the rainfall amount associated with Storm Chandra was "significant"

Yesterday, Phoenix Park experienced over 35mm of rainfall and Dublin Airport had near 30mm.

"This is an extremely large amount to fall in such a short period of time and most fell in the first half of the day.

"To put this into perspective, this is over 50% of the long term average rainfall that is expected to fall at either station.

"In addition, the past few months have been wetter than normal so the ground is completely saturated. Therefore there was little to no storage available, resulting in a number of rivers bursting their banks," he said.

Payments

Yesterday, the Department of Social Protection has announced that the Emergency Response Payment is available to provide support to those living in properties directly affected by Storm Chandra in Wicklow, Wexford and Dublin.

These payments have now been extended to support those householders affected by Storm Chandra in Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Louth and Monaghan.

Support is provided for people whose homes are damaged from flooding and severe weather events and who are unable to meet emergency costs for essential needs, household items and structural repair.

The scheme does not provide a general compensation payment for damage or losses incurred as a consequence of a weather event, nor does it cover damage or losses that are insured under home insurance policies or would reasonably be expected to have been covered by an insurance policy.

The scheme does not cover commercial, agricultural, or business losses.
