Met Éireann said unsettled conditions will persist during the start of this week, before colder and drier weather arrives.
Today (Monday, February 9), will be cloudy with any patches of fog slow to clear during the morning.
Rain and drizzle will spread from the south to most areas and will be followed by drier conditions in the south this evening.
Highest temperatures of 6° to 10°C with light to moderate easterly winds, fresh at times in the south and east.
Tonight will be cloudy and misty, the rain and drizzle will clear from the north with scattered outbreaks of light rain elsewhere.
More persistent rain will develop in the southwest by morning. Overnight lows of 4° to 8° in mainly light southeasterly winds.
Tuesday will be a dull day with rain and drizzle moving north-eastwards to most areas. There will be some patches of mist and fog.
Highest daytime temperatures of 7° to 12° in light to moderate, variable breezes.
It will be cloudy on Tuesday night with some rain or drizzle, along with mist and fog forming in the light to moderate west to south-west winds. Lowest temperatures of 4° to 8°.
Wednesday will be another cloudy day with outbreaks of rain or drizzle in many areas. Highest temperatures of 6° to 11° with light northerly or variable breezes.
Following a cloudy start on Wednesday night, clear spells will develop in the west. Lowest temperatures of 2° to 6° in light to moderate northerly breezes.
There will be patchy rain or drizzle on Thursday, before drier and brighter conditions develop later. Highest afternoon temperatures of 5° to 9°, in a light to moderate northerly breeze.
Thursday night will be cold as temperatures fall to between -3° and 2°, bringing a risk of frost and ice. It will be a mainly dry night with some isolated showers.
Friday is expected to be a bright and mostly dry day with isolated showers and good sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 4° to 7° in a light northerly breeze.
Met Éireann said that rainfall amounts were above average in parts of the south and east over the past week.
However, amounts were below average in parts of the south-west, the west and the north-west.
The east is forecast to receive higher than average rainfall over the coming week, while other areas are expected to see lower than average rainfall totals.
Mean air temperatures are forecast to be between 4° and 8° for the next seven days, within a degree either side of average.
Mean soil temperatures were between 5.1° and 7.4° degrees during the past week, with the highest values in the south and south-west.
Drying conditions and spraying conditions will be poor over the coming days due to outbreaks of rain and drizzle.
Met Éireann said that soils are currently saturated or waterlogged around the country, with conditions expected to stay similar for the coming seven days.
