Met Éireann extends weather warning for heavy rain

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow weather warning for heavy rain in Co. Waterford today (Sunday, March 1).

The national forecaster said the alert will be valid in the county from midday until midnight tonight.

The spells of heavy rain will lead to a risk of localised flooding, poor visibility and hazardous travelling conditions.

Met Éireann had already issued a Status Yellow rain warning for counties Cork, Kerry, Galway and Mayo.

That warning, which came into force from midnight, is due to remain in place until midnight tonight.

A Status Yellow gale warning for all coasts of Ireland and on the Irish Sea will be valid from 3:00p.m until midnight.

During this period, the southerly winds will reach gale force 8 at times.

In its latest farming commentary, Met Éireann said that rainfall amounts over the coming week will range between 16 and 50 mm (100 to 150% of average).

Most of this rain will occur this weekend, while there will be better dry periods from Monday onwards.

The coming week is expected to be a bit cooler with mean temperatures expected to be between 7° and 9°C (0° to 1° above average). Mean soil temperatures will continue above average.

From Monday, there will be better drying conditions, but some rain or showers are likely in the west at times.

There will be opportunities for spraying at times from Monday onwards.

Met Éireann said that many soils are currently saturated or waterlogged. Field conditions and trafficability will improve from Monday onwards.
