An Garda Síochána has today (Friday, March 20) arrested a man in relation to a suspected illegal 'cock fighting' event in Co. Monaghan almost two years ago.
The alleged event took place on July 27, 2024 and gardaí have continued to investigate what they suspect was an animal welfare incident.
Today, the garda investigation took a step forward with the arrest of a man, aged in his 70s, in connection with this investigation.
He was charged and released to appear before Monaghan District Court at a future date.
Gardaí have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
At approximately 11:00a.m on Saturday July 27, 2024, gardaí received a report of a suspected illegal "cock fighting" event allegedly taking place at a private residence in Emyvale, Co. Monaghan.
A large number of people reportedly fled the scene upon the arrival of gardaí.
The assistance of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) was then sought and a warrant to search the residence under Section 45 of Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 was obtained.
During the course of a search, 15 dead roosters were discovered on the property while a further 70 roosters were seized by a number of DAFM staff in attendance.
Evidence of suspected "cock fighting" was also seized.
An investigation is continuing at Monaghan Garda Station and gardaí have said that they continue to liaise with DAFM regarding this matter.
