Man (90s) dies in farm incident in Limerick

An Garda Síochána has confirmed that a man aged in his 90s has died in an incident on farm in Co. Limerick.

Gardaí were alerted to the incident on lands close to Askeaton on Monday evening (January 19)

The scene of the incident was attended by gardaí, emergency services and personal from Health and Safety Authority (HSA).

Gardaí said that inquiries into the incident are ongoing, and that a file is set to be prepared for the coroner.

Agriland understands that the farmer had been tending to livestock on the land.

Farm incident

In a statement, a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said: "Gardaí and emergency services responded to a fatal workplace accident at a premises near Askeaton, Co. Limerick at approximately 6:00p.m on Monday, January 19, 2026.

"A male in his 90s was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has since been removed to University Hospital Limerick for a post-mortem examination.

"The local Coroner has been notified. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been notified."

The HSA has confirmed to Agriland that it is "aware of the fatal incident and has launched an investigation". The authority added that "no further information is available at this time".

Provisional figures recently published by the HSA showed that there were 23 deaths in the agriculture sector in 2025.

This accounts for 40% of all work-related fatalities last year (58), from a sector employing approximately 4% of the workforce.

The construction sector recorded 10 fatalities compared to five in 2024.
