Layer producer conference to return this week

Teagasc will host its National Layer Conference for the fourth year in a row on Wednesday (May 20) at the Hillgrove Hotel, Co. Monaghan.

This conference will offer practical solutions with presentations on a range of topics.

Kevin Connolly of Teagasc will look at generational renewal, and go through important areas for layer producers to consider in relation to succession planning.

Dominic Arthurs, a free range egg producer, will discuss how he utilised on-farm data to drive his farm forward. He will be joined by and Dana Simpson of St David’s Poultry Team as they look at farm management.

Dave Hodson of Rosehill Poultry will go through the ins-and-outs of vaccination programmes and practical tips for administering vaccines.

Frank Clerkin, of Poultry Vet Services, will explain what health parameters and signs producers should be looking out for, what they should do if they notice any of those, and when it is time to call a vet.

In addition, Aonghus Lane, a vet with St. David’s Poultry Team, will explain what farmers should test their water for, how to interpret the water results report and give practical solutions to maintaining water quality.

‘Practical topics and solutions’

The afternoon will also see Rebecca Tierney, Teagasc poultry adviser, will also present the most recent graduates of Teagasc’s Level 5 course in poultry production with their Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) certificates. 

The event will also feature several poultry-specific companies exhibiting the latest technologies, nutritional advice, and sustainability options for producers. 

Speaking about the event, Tierney said: “It’s great to see demand for this event again this year in the layer sector.

“This year’s speakers will bring very practical topics and solutions to our producers.

“Again, the exhibitors bring a different angle to the event for networking, another learning experience and just catch-ups after a long winter with the housing order.”

The conference will take place at the Hillgrove Hotel, Old Armagh Road, Co. Monaghan, H18 RK15, from 1:00p.m to 5:30p.m.
