IBLA urges farmers to attend protest outside Dáil

The Irish Beef and Lamb Association (IBLA) is calling on farmers to attend a "peaceful protest" outside the Dáil tomorrow morning (Thursday, February, 5).

The protest will coincide with the appearance of Bord Bia chair Larry Murrin at the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food.

Last month, Dawn Farm Foods of which Murrin is CEO, confirmed that Brazilian beef accounted for 1% of its beef supply in 2025.

The issue has led to anger from farm organisations and some politicians, who claim that Murrin's business sourcing beef from Brazil is untenable with his role of chair of the body tasked with promoting Irish food.

In a statement, IBLA said that "this Bord Bia scandal is not going away because it cuts deep with many Irish farming families".

The association said a "key question" is who knows about "sub-standard south American meat products being for sale in Ireland".

"Every consumer has the right to chose what they eat and food labelling on all products must be clearly visible and transparent in order to make that choice," the group said.

IBLA said it will join other farming organisations outside Leinster House in Dublin tomorrow "to highlight the necessity of increased transparency in the food supply chain and clearer certification on all food products".

The association has requested that "the entire board of Bord Bia is stood down with immediate effect until a full investigation in to food safety and standards has been convened and concluded".

IBLA has also called for a "new consultative forum" to be established "to examine transparency and food labelling in the Irish food supply chain".

A forum to address the "current topical issues" had previously been called for by members of the Beef Market Taskforce, which came to an end in 2021.
