Gardaí have arrested a man, aged in his 50s, in connection with the investigation into the disappearance and homicide of Michael Gaine.

Gardaí at Killarney Garda Station also detailed that they are continuing to investigate the disappearance and homicide of Michael Gaine (56).

The Kerry farmer was reported missing from his home near Kenmare, Co. Kerry, on Friday, March 21 last year.

The suckler and sheep farmer was last seen in Kenmare town on Thursday, March 20, 2025.

A major search operation was organised at the time with the assistance of neighbours, locals and friends within the Kenmare community.

Gardaí had initially launched a missing person investigation into the disappearance of Michael Gaine but this was upgraded last April to a homicide investigation.

A month later, gardaí confirmed that human remains found on a farm in Co. Kerry were those of the missing farmer Michael Gaine.

Gardaí confirmed that the man who has been arrested today (Tuesday, February 24) has been detained for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a garda station in Kerry Garda Division.

In a statement, gardaí outlined that the investigation "led by Serious Crime Unit Kerry Division has been and continues to be supported by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI)".

"An Garda Síochána through family liaison officers continue to liaise with and support the family of Micheal Gaine," they added.

It marks the second arrest in relation to the ongoing investigation.

Previously a man in his 50s, who had been arrested in connection with the investigation into the murder of Kerry farmer, Michael Gaine, was released without charge from the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The arrested individual, a man aged in his 50s, had been arrested on May 18 and had been detained on suspicion of murder. He was subsequently released on May 20.
