Gardaí: 43% increase in reports of 'bogus tradesman' incidents

Reports of bogus traders increased by 43% 2025, when compared to the previous year, according to gardaí.

An Garda Síochána's provisional crime statistics published today (Monday, February 23) show that overall fraud offences were up by 137% on 2024.

The data shows significant increases in deception/other offences (up 273%) and forgery (160%).

There was a 183% rise in shopping/online auction offences, money laundering was up 164% and card not present fraud increased by 95% in a year.

Fraud relating to accommodation rose by 17% and account takeover fraud was up by 10% compared to 2024.

There were reductions recorded in counterfeit notes and coins (-77%) and insurance fraud (-43%).

Reports of phishing/vishing/smishing reports, which normally involves scam calls, emails and texts seeking sensitive information, were down 11%.

Gardaí

The provisional figures also show the level of property crime has decreased across most crime types in 2025 compared to 2024.

Aggravated burglary is down 14% and reports of non-aggravated burglary decreased by 13%.

There were significant reductions in reported burglaries in the north-west (-34%) and southern regions (-24% or nearly 1,000 fewer burglaries).

Residential burglaries were down 16% and non-residential burglaries fell by 9%.

Gardaí said the amount of residential burglaries in 2025 represents an average of less than 14 burglaries per day across the 26 counties, or less than 1 residential burglary per day per county.

There was a 20% drop in reports of robbery from a person and thefts from vehicles were down by 16%.

Criminal damage was down by 10%, but there was a 4% rise in public order offences and a slight increase (1%) in arson.

Demonstrations increased by 12% in 2025, with over 1,300 demonstrations nationwide

Nationally, crimes against the person in 2025 were at similar levels to the previous year.

There were a total of 40 murder and manslaughter offences, the same as 2024.

The number of harmful communications offences reported (almost 750) has increased by 27% compared to 2024.

Nationally, the number of sexual offences reported has decreased 12% compared to 2024.

An Garda Síochána received nearly 67,000 domestic abuse related calls in 2025, a slight increase of approximately 2% compared to 2024. This equates to nearly 1,300 contacts every week.

Roads

During 2025 there were nearly 54,000 road traffic collisions reported to An Garda Síochána.

This marked an overall 4% increase or nearly 150 road traffic collisions every day.

188 people lost their lives on Irish roads in 2025.

The number of people detected driving while intoxicated was similar to 2024 at over 8,100 drivers.

During 2025, gardaí, and their road safety partners GoSafe, issued approximately 169,000 Fixed Charge Notices (FCN) for speeding offences.

Gardaí also issued more than 160,000 FCNs including 24,500 for mobile phones (11.5% increase), 7,100 for driving without reasonable consideration (up 25%) and 6,200 for seatbelts (up 6.5%).
