Further batches of SMA infant formula recalled - FSAI

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has confirmed that additional batches of SMA infant formula and follow on formula products have been recalled.

This follows several food alerts issued by the authority in relation to the Nestlé products since January 5.

The FSAI said it is notifying consumers of the possible presence of cereulide in additional batches and products, due to possible indirect distribution to Ireland from the UK.

Cereulide toxin is produced by the bacterium bacillus cereus. The toxin may be pre-formed in a food and is extremely heat resistant.

Consumption of foods containing cereulide toxin can lead to nausea and severe vomiting. Symptoms can appear within five hours. The duration of illness is usually six to 24 hours.

The FSAI said that batch codes of the implicated products can be found on the base of the tin or box for powdered formulas, or the base of the outer box and on the side/top of the container for ready-to-feed formulas.

Parents, guardians and caregivers are advised not to feed the implicated batches to infants or young children.

Retailers are requested to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale.

While wholesalers and distributors are asked to contact their affected customers and recall the implicated batches and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retailer customers.

Nestlé is advising its customers that have purchased any of these batches to contact them via its online form, sharing a photo of the product and the batch code or by calling its careline on 1800 931 832.

In a statement Nestlé said that "out of an abundance of caution, the recall notice in Ireland has been updated to include details of all batches recalled in the UK".

"While these batches may have reached the Irish market through indirect supply chains, the likelihood of these products being available on shelves is very low.

"Many of the batch codes listed in the food alert are not typically sold in Ireland, and all products that are sold into the Northern Irish market by Nestlé UK includes ‘Not for EU’ label on the packaging.

"We want to reassure consumers that the scope and scale of the recall remain unchanged, and our guidance is consistent," the company said.

Nestlé encouraged all consumers to check if their batch code is affected by visiting its website.

"If you have purchased an affected product, please do not feed it to your baby and dispose of it immediately.

"Members of the public can also share a photo of the product and the batch code via the same link or by calling our careline on 1800 931 832 and will be issued a refund.

"Anyone concerned about their baby’s health should contact a healthcare professional," the company added.
