FTMTA: New tractor registrations in Ireland hit 17 year high

More new tractors were registered in Ireland last month than in Britain and Northern Ireland, according to the Farm Tractor and Machinery Trade Association (FTMTA).

There were 577 new tractors registered in January 2026, which was 51% higher compared with the same month last year.

According to the FTMTA, this is the highest number of new tractor registrations in Ireland recorded since 2009.

The biggest number of new tractors were registered in Co. Cork at 75, followed by Tipperary with 50 new tractors and then Kilkenny with 39.

The most popular power band for January 2026 was the 161-200hp category, which accounted for 25% of all new tractor registrations for the month.

The over 200hp category accounted for 12.65% of all new tractors for the month of January 2026.

The monthly average tractor horsepower figure for January 2026 was 155hp, and the largest tractor registered was rated at 351hp.

FTMTA

According to the latest FTMTA Statistics Service Report for January 2026, the numbers of imported used tractors and machines, registered for the first time in Ireland, increasedcompared with the same month of January 2025.

A total of 233 imported used tractors were first-time registered in Ireland last month, which is 39 units more than in January 2025.

Telescopic loaders

Meanwhile the Irish market for new telescopic loaders also saw 10% growth last month, with 172 units compared with January 2025.

Two brands - JCB and Manitou - accounted for 70% of the total market, but latest market data also shows that Weidemann has grown to a healthy 10% market share.

According to the FTMTA, there were 51 imported used telescopic loaders registered last month which is a significant increase from 30 units registered in January 2025.

Wheeled loaders

There was also strong growth in the Irish wheeled loader market, which recorded a higher number of new registrations last month in January at 48 units compared to the same month last year - at 22 units.

The smaller Chinese manufactured machines at the lower price and power end of the market accounted for over 40% of the new wheeled loader registrations in Ireland.

Latest figures show there were just eight imported used wheeled loaders registered in January 2026.

Backhoe loaders

According to the latest FTMTA Statistics Service Report, the Irish backhoe loader market increased in January 2026 compared with the same month last year.

There were 23 new machines registered, which converts to a 130% increase.

There were also seven used backhoe loaders registered in Ireland last month.

UTV registrations

Latest figures for UTV registrations show there were 35 new utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) registered last month compared with 38 in January 2025 which represents a marginal decline.

There were also two used imported UTV registered for the first time in January 2026.

The FTMTA Statistics Service Reports are compiled from monthly raw data received from the Irish Revenue Commissioners, who are responsible for all first-time registrations of new and used vehicles in Ireland.
