FSAI issues recall notice for batch of ham

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has recalled a batch of Divilly Brothers ham as it contains gluten (wheat), which is not declared in the list of ingredients on some packs.

This may make the batch unsafe for consumers who are allergic to or intolerant of cereals containing gluten (wheat) and therefore, these consumers should not eat the implicated batch.

The recall applies to Divilly Brothers No Added Nitrite Crumbed Ham.

The pack size is 90g; with a batch code of 20163983; and a use-by date of June 4, 2026.

Gluten

According to the Irish Osteoporosis Society: “Coeliac disease is a condition causing some adults or children to react to gluten, the protein found in wheat, barley, oats and rye.

“If a coeliac eats gluten, the lining of the small intestines becomes damaged, reducing the coeliac ability to absorb the nutrients from certain foods.

"This can lead to various symptoms and complications if undiagnosed.”

According to the Health Service Executive (HSE), coeliac disease is usually treated by cutting out foods that contain gluten.

The HSE said that those who live with coeliac disease “must give up all sources of gluten for life”.

Other FSAI recalls

On Wednesday (May 20), the FSAI confirmed a recall for baby fromage frais products due to possible mould growth and spoilage.

The authority said that the recall includes various Glenisk Baby Organic Fromage Frais products, and advised parents, guardians and caregivers are advised not to feed the implicated batches to young children.

Earlier this month, the authority confirmed a further recall of Western Brand chicken products due to the presence of salmonella.

The FSAI said Western Brand is recalling various batches of chicken products sold in Aldi, Tesco, Dunnes Stores, and Lidl branded under the names of those supermarkets.
