Danone recalls infant milk batch indirectly sent to Ireland from UK

Danone is recalling a batch of Aptamil 1 From Birth First infant milk due to the presence of a toxin.

This batch was indirectly distributed to Ireland from the UK via the Boots.ie website, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) said in its recall notice.

It is being recalled due to the presence of cereulide.

The affected batch has a pack size of 800g and expiry date of 31-10-2026.

The FSAI said that recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale.

Danone is advising customers to contact its Aptamil careline team if they have any queries regarding this recall.

Toxin

Cereulide toxin is produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus, the FSAI said.

The toxin may be pre-formed in a food and is extremely heat resistant.

Consumption of foods containing cereulide toxin can lead to nausea and severe vomiting.

Symptoms can appear within five hours. The duration of illness is usually six to 24 hours.

Retailers are requested to remove the implicated batch from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale.

Wholesalers/distributors are requested to contact their affected customers and recall the implicated batch and provide a point-of-sale recall notice to their retailer customers.

Parents, guardians and care givers are advised not to feed the implicated batch to infants or young children.

Danone statement

In a statement, Danone said it "never compromises on food safety, and we would like to reassure parents our infant formula products are safe".

"In light of the current situation in the industry, some local food safety authorities are evolving their guidance," Danone said.

"As a responsible manufacturer and to comply with the latest guidance, Danone has withdrawn from targeted markets a very limited number of specific batches of infant formula products.

"Customers who ordered Aptamil First Infant Milk 800g via Boots.ie only between June and July 2025 may have inadvertently received the isolated batch that was recalled in the UK market due to indirect distribution.

"This relates to an isolated batch number / expiry 31-10-2026.

"This does not impact any other Danone products in the Irish market and our infant formula products can be purchased and used as normal."

Danone said its priority is to "ensure that parents and healthcare professionals can continue to place their trust in the safety and quality of our infant formula products".

Series of recalls

There have recently been a number of recalls issued for infant and follow-on formula products across Europe and further afield, due to the presence of a toxin, cereulide, in the batches concerned.

The recalls are associated with a contaminated raw ingredient.

An ingredient, ARA oil, which was manufactured in China, was contaminated with cereulide and added as an ingredient in base powder used to make infant formula and follow-on formula.

Nestlé has also recalled batches of various SMA infant and follow-on formula products due to the possible presence of cereulide.

French dairy giant Lactalis also recently recalled batches of baby formula.
