CSO: Over 2,400 new tractors licensed for first time in 2025

2,464 new tractors were licensed for the first time in 2025, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

This represents an increase of 139 units or 16% when compared to the 2,131 new tractors registered in 2024.

The new data shows that 85 new tractors were licensed in the first time in December, up 39% on the same month in the previous year when 61 units were registered.

The CSO said that 2,740 used (imported) tractors were licensed for the first time in 2025, which is up 174 or 7% compared to a year previously (2,566).

In December, 193 used tractors were registered, an increase of 27% on the corresponding month in 2024 (152 units).

The report also shows the number of new private electric cars licensed in 2025 (23,398) rose by 36% when compared with 2024 (17,191).

This means the share of electric vehicles (EVs) among new private cars in 2025 was 19% compared with 15% in 2024.

In 2025, there were 31,221 new petrol cars licensed compared with 36,433 in 2024, a fall of 14%.

The number of new diesel cars licensed decreased by 23% to 20,562 over the same period.

The total number of used (imported) private cars licensed in 2025 rose by 16% compared with 2024 to 71,604.

Toyota was the most popular make of new private cars licensed in 2025, while the most popular brand of new electric car licensed in 2025 was the Volkswagen ID.4

The CSO noted that registration and licensing figures may differ in a given month for a number of reasons, including:

  • Vehicles registered in the latter part of a particular month may not be licensed until a later month because of the time lapse between registration and first licensing;
  • In some cases, a vehicle may be registered by a dealership in advance of a sale;
  • Registered vehicles which are not used in a public place (e.g. tractors for use exclusively on the land) may not need to be licensed.
