CSO: 30% rise in new tractors licensed for first time in February

300 new tractors were licensed for the first time in February, according to new data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

This represents a 30% increase compared to the same month last year when 231 new tractors were licensed.

In the first two months of this year, 639 new tractors were registered, which is up 173 units or 37% on the same period in 2025 (466 units).

The CSO said that 225 used (imported) tractors were licensed for the first time in February 2026, which is up by 10 units (5%) on a year previous.

Up to the end of February, 482 used (imported) tractors were registered, compared to 444 units in the same two-month period in 2025.

The data also shows that the overall number of new private cars licensed in February 2026 (13,660) fell by 5% when compared with February 2025 (14,394).

The number of used (imported) cars licensed increased by 40% to 7,654 in February 2026, compared to 5,454 in February 2025.

3,074 new private electric cars were licensed in February 2026, up 8% on the same month last year (2,853).

This means the share of electric vehicles (EVs) among new private cars from January to February 2026 was 22% compared with 17% in the same period of 2025.

There was also growth in the licensing of hybrid vehicles which were up 21% from 3,289 in February 2025 to 3,985 new private cars in February 2026.

The combined share of petrol and diesel cars among new private cars licensed from January to February 2026 stood at 31%, which is down from 42% last year.

Toyota was the most popular make of new private car licensed in February 2026 at 2,008 vehicles, followed by Kia (1,324), Volkswagen (1,313), Hyundai (1,260), and Skoda (972).

The Volkswagen ID.4 was the most popular make of electric car with 275 vehicles, followed by Toyota BZ4X (166), and Kia EV 3 (123).

The number of new goods vehicles was up by 11% in February 2026 to 3,466 when compared with February 2025 (3,116).

The year-to-date number of new goods vehicles is 6,353, up 16% from 5,465 new goods vehicles licensed for the first time in February 2025.
