Bord Bia chair Larry Murrin has agreed to appear before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture and Food.

Chair of the committee and Fianna Fáil TD Aindrias Moynihan has confirmed to Agriland that the Bord Bia chair has accepted an invitation to address members.

While Deputy Moynihan said that no date has yet been confirmed, it is likely the meeting may take place next week.

Larry Murrin has been at the centre of controversy after it was confirmed that his company Dawn Farm Foods confirmed that Brazilian beef accounted for 1% of its beef supply in 2025.

Farm organisations and some politicians, who claim that Murrin's business sourcing beef from Brazil clashes with his role of chair of the body tasked with promoting Irish food.

The Irish Farmers' Association (IFA) has been staging an ongoing protest outside Bord Bia offices in Dublin since Monday (January 26).

The farm organisation believes the position of the Bord Bia chair, Larry Murrin, is "untenable", adding that "farmer confidence will only be restored with his removal".

Bord Bia

The Oireachtas Committee for Agriculture and Food held a private meeting on Tuesday (January 27).

During that meeting there was a request from Fianna Fáil spokesperson on agriculture and TD for Carlow-Kilkenny Peter 'Chap' Cleere for Larry Murrin to be invited to address the committee.

He is among several Fianna Fáil TDs who have called on Larry Murrin to consider his position as chair of Bord Bia.

Fianna Fáil TD for Clare and suckler farmer Cathal Crowe said he will be raising his concerns about the issue in government circles.

While Ryan O'Meara, Fianna Fáil TD for Tipperary North, said it was clear to him that "the confidence of Irish farmers has been lost in the chair of Bord Bia.

Confidence

The TDs position is at odds with that of Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon who has stated that Murrin has his "full confidence" as Bord Bia chair.

During an exchange in the Dáil with Sinn Féin's Martin Kenny earlier today, Minister Heydon hit out at the decision by the IFA to protest outside Bord Bia headquarters.

"Farmers are being done a disservice, because there isn't a practical and a fair space for discussion on this," he said.
