April 2026 brought above average temperatures and rainfall, according to data from Met Éireann.
The latest Climate Statement shows that the national mean April temperature was 9.69°C, making it the 12th warmest April since 1900.
The month’s highest temperature was reported at Claremorris, Co. Mayo on April 24 with a temperature of 21.3°.
All mean air temperatures across the country were above their long term average (LTA) for the month.
Mean temperatures for the month ranged from 8.5° at both Ballyhaise, Co. Cavan and Knock Airport, Co. Mayo to 10.4° at Valentia Observatory, Co. Kerry.
The month’s lowest air minimum was recorded on April 13 at Mount Dillon, Co. Roscommon with -1.8°, while the lowest grass minimum was -6° reported at Casement Aerodrome, Co. Dublin on April 20.
More than half of weather stations reported ground frost during the month.
April 2026 was wetter than normal with 113% of the 1991-2020 LTA (92.7 mm) and is ranked the 21st wettest April since 1941.
The highest daily rainfall total was 38.6 mm at Belmullet, Co. Mayo on April 4.
Monthly rainfall totals ranged from 20.2mm (37% of its LTA) at Casement Aerodrome, Co. Dublin to 151.1 mm (139% of its LTA) at Valentia Observatory, Co. Kerry, its wettest April since 2018.
The highest daily rainfall total was 38.6mm at Belmullet, Co. Mayo on April 4, its highest daily fall for April on record.
The number of wet days (1.0 mm or more of rainfall) ranged from 8 days at a few stations to 19 days at Belmullet, Co. Mayo.
The number of very wet days (10.0 mm or more of rainfall) ranged from zero days at a few stations to 6 days at Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry.
Mace Head, Co. Galway had its wettest April on record with 109.8mm (165% of its LTA).
Two stations in the east, Phoenix Park and Casement Aerodrome, Co. Dublin, had dry spells lasting 15 days between April 16 and 30.
Monthly mean wind speeds in April 2026 ranged from 12.6 km/hr at Mount Dillon, Co. Roscommon to 28.5 km/hr at Mace Head, Co Galway.
Gales were reported on seven days during the month, with Storm Dave bringing strong gales at three stations on April 4.

The month’s highest gust was reported at both Roches Point, Co. Cork and Valentia Observatory, Co. Kerry both on April 4 with 111 km/hr.
